So, last night didn't exactly turn out the way I had envisioned. Paul was heading home from NYC. Mary Frances and I were going to pick him up from the airport after his plane landed at 7:30pm. Mary Frances was bathed, in her PJ's and ready for bed. We were going to pick him up, come home, feed the little lady, put her to bed, eat dinner and watch Thursday night's episode of Burn Notice. That's not what happened...
As we were on our way to the airport to pick Paul up, my car started feeling funny. We were on the 78/85 connector heading southbound right before the N. Ave exit. All of a sudden, I notice that my car has stopped accelerating and when I put my foot on the gas, it seemed to slow down more instead of accelerate. My car slowed to a stop and I was in the far left hand lane, to the right of the HOV lane. At this point in the evening it is right before 8 pm and traffic is still pretty constant. If you have ever driven through downtown Atlanta, you know how terrifying it can be to drive on the connector anyways, much less to be completely stopped in the far left hand lane with cars flying around you! All this to say that I have my 5 month old baby in the car with me!
I tried turning my car off and restarting it. Once I put my foot on the gas, the same thing happened. Immediately I called 911 (so thankful that was my first reaction!) and within seconds they had me on the phone with HERO and within 5 minutes they had 2 officers to my location. I have never been more thankful to see blue flashing lights pull up behind me (for those of you who know my ticket record this year, you will understand)! Within minutes they had all lanes of the interstate shut down so that I could actually pull over to the side of the road. I got the biggest kick out of them stopping all traffic for me :)
Anyways, once we were over on the shoulder of the road, I felt much better. HERO came and unfortunately couldn't do anything for my car, but the Atlanta Police were WONDERFUL and called a tow truck for me and stayed with me until my car was hitched up and Mary Frances and I were safely in the cab of the truck. Thankfully my mom and dad were available to come pick us up. Paul took MARTA home and we picked him up from the station. Paul's car is actually in the shop as well, so we are car-less for the moment.
We have so many things to be thankful for. The greatest being our safety. The Lord completely put a hedge of protection around our car. After I called 911, I called Paul to tell him what had happened. I was completely hysterical by that point, but as I saw the cars slowing and stopping behind us to get over, I could see God's hand in it keeping us safe. It was a miracle that no one hit us! I am also so thankful that Mary Frances was a happy baby throughout the situation. She didn't cry one time and on the way home was just smiling and cooing away. She had no idea what had happened! Finally, I am thankful that the entire situation took less than an hour from breakdown to my parents picking us up. I'm not so thankful that my car is out of commission, but I know that the Lord will provide for that as well.
So that was how our Friday night turned out! Here's to a better Saturday!
Love,
Katy
